Silvio Michel: Like the Air I Breathe

BY The Spartan Editors

For Silvio Michel, Spartan is not just a sport. It is not just a race calendar. It is not just another weekend away. It is something deeper. Something he needs.

By the end of 2026, Silvio expects to complete 18 Trifectas for the year and reach 97 lifetime Trifectas. That puts him within reach of another massive milestone: the 100 Lifetime Trifecta Club.

But before that next milestone comes the chase in front of him now.

The 13x Trifecta Shield.

For Silvio, this year is personal. He is chasing the Shield because he wants to test himself again, push through another full season, and move one step closer to the 100x club.

“It’s my personal challenge,” Silvio said. “And I want to join the x100 club next year.”

That is what makes his journey powerful.

Not one finish line. Not one season. Not one medal.

A lifetime of returning to the start line.

A lifetime of choosing the course again.

A lifetime of proving that the fire is still there.

The Shield means a lot to Silvio because it represents the hardships he has endured throughout the year. The travel. The fatigue. The racing. The days when the body is tired but the goal still asks for more.

To him, the Shield is a personal reward.

Not something given.

Something earned.

In ancient Sparta, a shield was not decoration. It was proof that you stood in the fight. That you carried the weight. That you did not step away when the moment became difficult.

For Silvio, the 13x Trifecta Shield carries that same meaning. It is the symbol of a year spent enduring, committing, and continuing when stopping would have been easier.

There have been many great races in his Spartan journey, but two places stand above the rest.

Sparta and Hvar.

Those are the moments that moved him most. The places that stayed with him long after the finish line. The races that became more than races.

And for Silvio, one memory sits at the center of it all.

Sparta 2018.

His first Trifecta World Championship.

Every Spartan has a moment where the sport becomes something bigger. A race that changes the way they see themselves. A finish line that becomes a marker in their life. A place they can point to and say, that is where something shifted.

For Silvio, that place was Sparta.

Maybe that is why the chase still matters so much. Because when a race becomes part of who you are, you do not just leave it behind. You carry it with you. You build on it. You come back to it.

Again and again.

When asked about the hardest part of chasing the Shield, Silvio’s answer was simple:

“I don’t know. It is routine by now.”

That could sound casual.

It is not.

Because when something this difficult becomes routine, it means the athlete has changed. What once may have seemed impossible becomes part of life. The travel, the training, the racing, the recovery, the next start line, the next finish line.

It all becomes part of the rhythm.

That does not mean it is easy.

It means Silvio has learned how to keep going.

And when things get tough, his answer is even more direct:

“It is like an addiction. I can’t stop.”

There is honesty in that.

Because some goals do not let go. Some finish lines pull you toward the next one before the mud has even dried. Some races hurt, exhaust you, test you, and still leave you wanting more.

For Silvio, Spartan has become that kind of force.

His husband has been his greatest support throughout the journey, standing with him through the demands of a year built around racing, travel, and the pursuit of another Shield.

That support matters.

Because no athlete reaches a goal like this alone. Behind every finish line is someone who understands the early mornings, the tired legs, the long weekends, and the reason it still matters.

Silvio’s advice to anyone chasing their first Trifecta is simple:

“Don’t think too much. Go to the starting line and just do it. You are stronger than you think.”

That is the kind of advice only an experienced Spartan can give.

Because before the first Trifecta, the goal can feel too big. The Beast can feel too far. The obstacles can feel too intimidating. The whole idea can feel like something meant for someone else.

But Silvio knows the truth.

You start.

You move.

You discover strength while you are already on the course.

And somewhere between the doubt and the finish line, you realize you were capable of more than you knew.

Silvio chases Trifectas because he needs it like the air he breathes.

That line says everything.

This is not about collecting races.

It is about identity. Purpose. Movement. The pull of the next challenge. The feeling of coming back to life somewhere between the start line and the fire jump.

By the time Silvio reaches Sparta, the Shield will represent more than 18 Trifectas in 2026.

It will represent the hardships of the year.

The memory of Sparta 2018.

The support of his husband.

The road toward 100 lifetime Trifectas.

And the truth that keeps bringing him back:

Some people race because they want to finish.

Silvio Michel races because Spartan has become part of how he breathes.
